Damour's weekly breakdown of the Battle mage secrets
CHALLENGE RULES
RULESET: Close Range
Description:
Monsters with ranged attacks are allowed to attack in the first position.
- You can use high HP or high speed Ranged monsters at position 2 (or even at position 1 if it has Heal).
- Choose summoners that give a bonus to Ranged attack or to speed and then choose high damage Ranged attack monsters.
- The other choice here is to completely go the opposite and go for a solid melee tank and second monster and a magic backline this allows you to avoid being countered by summoners that have negative affects on range with the Return fire ability.
Ruleset Nerfs
| Rulesets that don't support | Reasons |
|---|---|
| This clearly does not benefit range monsters in any way. | |
| Makes it even more likely your opponent will go with a magic option |
Ruleset Buffs
| Rulesets that support | Reasons |
|---|---|
| This will allow you to counter with anti range summoner and have 100 % success of your opponent taking extra damage . | |
| You know your opponent will not be using magic and can plan to counter range and melee monsters | |
| This also prevents your opponent from using any sneaky melee tactics against you. Magic is still an option here. |
Monsters breakdown
Buffs
This will allow you to get +1 damage from the return fire ability as well as thorns or magic reflect. in case your opponent chooses to go with melee or magic play.
This will hurt any range monsters your opponent deploys but do be careful you can also be hurt by this if you use range monsters.
Nerfs
Go with Melee and Magic monsters if you suspect that your opponent is using summoners with the return fire ability.
Summoners breakdown
| Summoners buffs | Reasons |
|---|---|
| Mylor Crowling | if you suspect your opponent is going melee. |
| Ilthain | Summoners with return fire is very useful here if your opponent does play ranged buff with amplify to get even more bang for your buck. |
| Lir Deepswimmer | Summoners with return fire is very useful here if your opponent does play ranged buff with amplify to get even more bang for your buck. |
| Sloan | If you know your opponent is not going to counter you with Lir or Ilthain this is a possible use case for the +1 range. |
| Summoners nerfs | Reasons |
|---|---|
| None | Can't think of any particular summoners that are negatively affected by this ruleset. |
Without further delay lets dig into a battle to see some of our recommendations in action.
Our opponent has gone with a range team and Sloan summoner in order to buff his range.
I chose to deploy Possibilus the wise in order to take advantage of the extra health and a little added bonus of the trample. As you can see our placement is a tank card upfront and a second tank in the form of Coastal Sentry with the double strike. Our back line is a good mix of range and magic. The good mix of damage here does not make my team very easy to counter. I wanted to include a stun monster to possibly get some extra damage from the that.
