For sure a lot like a Mario game. Even a lot of the sounds make me think about Mario.

Yes I did end up beating chapter 3. I played it for 3 hours with a really shitty group. Quit trying with them and decided to give it one more try and I beat it with some randoms in like 10 minutes.
