CGC, Certified Guaranty Company, just announced that they are branching out and now also accept Video Games.
What this does is it acts as a guarantee for anyone looking to collect the game. A CGC-graded game will have a standard in accordance with its grade. They are using the same 10-point scale as they do with their comics.
The drawback of getting your games graded. Well, the first is the most obvious. It will cost you money to do this. And if your game is not of a high enough grade, and sought after by collectors. It might just end up costing you money.

The second part is also a pretty severe drawback. In order for them to guarantee the quality of the game. Just like with the comics. They will seal it in a plastic case. This means no more playing said game for you or anyone else for that matter.
You can ofcourse breal the case and take out the game and play it. Like it was intended. But that leaves you with the whole part of why getting it graded in the first place.
The third part is a bit of a bubble-edged sword if you will. By this I mean a graded game will cost you more if you are looking to buy that game. Compared to an ungraded version of the same quality. But this can also be a good thing. If you have a sought-after game in good condition that you want to sell. Then having it graded can bring you more money, if you can find a buyer.
The last part has to do with grading itself. If we look at comics that you have been able to get graded for several years now. We have seen a very clear shift in what now a day considers a certain grade vs what it originally was.
As high grades are more sought after, the company also makes more money with higher grades. There has been a virtual boom of comics of the highest grade. Now you can find 9.8 comis left and right. While a few years back they were an extremely rare occurrence.
But I guess that is what happens when you have money as an incentive.
Personaly I think both video games and comics should be played and read. So I would implore you to play your classic games. Instead of locking them up in a plastic box.
