Lightning is dangerous when it rains
It's up to us whether we're playing ball on the field, swimming in the lake or climbing through the wilderness, when the sky is open and starting to spill its contents, we know that it's time we look for the nearest shelter. What most people do not understand is that they can remain at risk of being struck by lightning even if it is not raining.
Thunderstorms are often struck 5 kilometers outside of storms, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Experts even have several names to help explain this unusual phenomenon. "Bolts from The Blue", for example, is the lightning that usually occurs on the back of a storm. Lightning of this type generally grabs when the sky is not much cloud, as far as 40 Kilometers from the nearest rain cloud. "Anvil Lightning", is a type of lightning that occurs at the center of a storm, grabbing the ground as far as 80 Kilometers.
Wearing headphones makes us a prime target
Our decision to take a walk outside or while on the bus, train, car while enjoying the music using colorful and large headphones when it is cloudy, or after the rain is fun and makes our heads nod / headbang enjoy the rhythm of music, right.....? but that does not make us a candidate or lightning target in the atmosphere.
In this case the height factor is the one that influences. As the Empire State Building shows, the closer we get to the sky the more we are touched by the lightning. So if we are in a position less than 30 meters above the ground, then just calm down, max your volume, and keep swaying. :D
Be careful if crossing the road. Our headphone wires might make us electrically struck considering that the cable can deliver electrical current to our body. We can still get severe burns, so even though the above facts are true, do not necessarily make us stop looking for a shelter when a storm happens.
