Founded by Justus Erus in Lomekwi, Kenya, in 1999, and allegedly aged 3.5-3.2 million years. This fossil (KNM-WT 40000) features a relatively flat face, and a small tooth. Has a brain volume that is relatively similar to australopithecines. Selan that he has a small ear hole like a chimp. Meave Leakey, the leader of the excavation, named Kenyanthropus platyops (a flat-faced man from Kenya).

The views of scientists are still divided, some suspect this includes Australopithecus, either a separate species (Australopithecus platyops) or nothing more than Australopithecus afarensis, living in the same era and area. This is because the fossil is found in cracked conditions and its shape has been distorted.

The bones found at the site include more than 30 skull and tooth fragments. At the time that this species lived, there were several other human-like species, each well adapted to life in their particular environments.
Kenyanthropus was seen to have a small ear hole, like that of chimpanzees and has a small brain like other primitive hominids. It has high cheek bones and a flat plane beneath its nose bone, giving it a flat face.

Fossil findings:

  • KNM-WT 40000, found Justus Erus in 1999 in Lomekwi, Kenya
