Imagine cycling from Europe to faraway Japan? Too crazy? In 2021, a young woman from Belgium covered over thirteen thousand kilometers, achieving this feat. The best part? They documented the whole journey. Today, I'll tell you a bit about this documentary.

I got to enjoy "Women Don't Cycle" as part of the activities of the Bicycle Festival in Havana. This time, it was projected in a peculiar way, not through streaming or in a cinema. We watched it projected on the side of building walls, as part of a project in my city called "El Parqueo", which promotes outdoor cinema for free, in a unique cultural initiative.

If you decide to watch it, you'll enjoy a rather special and different documentary. It was released in 2022, and I had always forgotten to watch it until life finally gave me the chance.

Hopefully, someday we'll see the documentary "Freechain" projected in a similar way; that would be an achievement. hivecuba@hivecuba take note

Back to "Women Don't Cycle"... The documentary follows Manon Brulard, a young Belgian cyclist, as she embarks on a peculiar bicycle journey from Brussels to Tokyo (around 13,500 km).
<div align="justify"Along her route, Manon encounters female cyclists from the countries she passes through, regions I had to look up on the map because I had only heard very little about them. The young woman introduces us to the stories, struggles, and experiences of being cyclists and women in other countries from Europe to Asia.
We'll see the many challenges women face when it comes to riding a bicycle. How culture and religion influence what is as simple for you as riding a bike and touring the city with your friends.
The documentary revolves around safety, gender equality, and women's autonomy in something as simple as riding a bicycle.
Without realizing it, Manon will lead us to understand how two wheels become a symbol of empowerment and resistance for women in countries I only knew from the news.
On this journey, myths and beliefs that may surprise you are unveiled (I don't want to spoil it; it's challenging because this documentary is a marvel that must be told and seen).
The most interesting thing about the documentary is that as Manon delves into the stories of these women, the protagonist herself reflects on her own journey and her role as a female cyclist. Even better, it's how she leads the viewer to ask themselves the same questions she does, or to think about how they can improve things for a particular sector in their environment (it doesn't matter if you're a man or not; you will reflect).
The documentary may be about a young cyclist, but it portrays a world of realities that are interesting to know.

Being a documentary filmed without preparation, without technical equipment, and on a bicycle, you might think these aspects take a back seat.
The truth is, this documentary is astonishing and incredibly so. In my opinion, it far exceeds the expectations I had.
From Manon's choice to continue her journey, from the very beginning in Brussels to her arrival in Tokyo and subsequent return to Belgium.
There are no scripts here; we see real interactions. The feelings, sorrows, and struggles of women in different countries will be experienced throughout the documentary.
We can see how the young Belgian interacts with other people in a real and emotional way, which dispels the belief that many documentaries may be planned.
Photography plays an important role in this genre. This time, we go from the European fields in winter to the sweltering heat of the Middle East, capturing the level of achievement accomplished by these young people.
Music and editing play a crucial role, creating an atmosphere that is sometimes gentle and melancholic and at other times, cheerful and dynamic. Along with photography and perfect editing, we have a recipe for the documentary's success.

This work deeply affected me. I live in Cuba, a country where women cycle alongside men. Where there is no inequality or problems for women.
Seeing the reality of other countries, where these acts are judged, made me appreciate those small details and at the same time, I realized how much progress we still have to make as a society.
I was moved to see the spirit of the women in the documentary; many have been discriminated against or have struggled to get on a bike, but they all have in common that they have not stopped trying and have managed to change the mindset of many people.
It's a truly motivating work. I'd be lying if I told you there's a specific audience to watch it. Whether you're a woman or a man, wherever you live, you must see it.
I'm sure you'll like it and it might even inspire and motivate you to achieve great things.
I liked the ideas conveyed in this documentary, and that's why I think it should be here. If you need a little push to start or get out of a bad moment, remember that there are women who are fighting against society's stigmas to get on a bicycle. So keep fighting.
I could continue talking to you about the documentary, but I don't want to give any spoilers. I think after this article, you'll be more than motivated to watch it; it's a screening that lasts less than an hour (so it won't take much of your time).
I just ask that if you like it, come back to this post and tell me what you think, and if the article was useful to you, let me know in the comments.
Before I say goodbye, I'd like to know, which country are you reading me from? and What is the situation of women regarding cycling? Do you know many who ride bicycles? Or is it not well regarded?
I won't be judging your comment; I'm just interested in knowing realities beyond what my eyes see. If you feel comfortable, it will be a pleasure to read you in the comments.

Now, see you next time.

驴Demasiado loco?

( no importa si eres mujer o no, vas a reflexionar )
Los guiones, aqu铆 no existen, veremos interacciones reales.

As铆 que no dejes de luchar.

O, 驴No est谩 bien visto?
