Hey Everybody. I'm back with another quick recap of sports in America. We're kind of in a transition period right now. The NFL is done and the NBA, NHL, and college hoops are making their way towards the playoffs. The PGA is still over a month away from the year's first major and tennis is a couple months away as well. In other words, lots going on but nothing really important as far as winning championships.
That said, there are still some things that should get some attention, the biggest of which is probably the trades made in the NBA leading into the stretch run.
Kyrie Irving started it all by asking to be traded from the Nets. They obliged by sending him to Dallas where Luka Doncic was in desparate need of help in their bid to get to and win a championship. Not to be outdone, Phoenix then acquired the other half of the Brooklyn "super team", Kevin Durant, and immediately return themselves to serious contenders. The Lakers added DeAngelo Russell and a couple depth players into the mix to help LeBron and Anthony Davis while shipping off Russell Westbrook to Utah who has since joined the Clippers after clearing waivers. The Clippers also landed Eric Gordon, Bones Hyland, and Mason Plumlee and all of a sudden they're in the mix as well.
The West definitely had some major shakeups so now we'll see how the dust settles and who can put together a strong push down the stretch.
College hoops is sprinting towards the finish with conference tournaments only a week and change away. Everything is about the "bubble" right now with teams trying to play their way into the Big Dance in the last week of the season. Still too close to call on who will be in and who will be out, but this time of year the emotion really ramps up and the games can be fun to watch.
I should also mention that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won NASCAR's biggest race, the Daytona 500, last weekend in double-overtime, holding off last season's Cup champion Joey Logano. As always, that race is as much about surviving as winning as there were lots of wrecks down the stretch. This year's race ended up being the longest race by laps and miles in history going 212 laps and 530 miles.
Short one this week as, like I said, leagues and teams are making their final runs into the postseason. And wouldn't you know it, as they finally start to wind down, major league baseball had it's first full slate of preseason exhibition games this weekend. The wheel keeps turning...
