So my son came home from his first Gym class in the first grade and told me that he needed to get a new gym bag. We had sent his extra clothes for gym in a reusable cloth bag, the type you get at many stores. The issue is that all of the other kids have a bag with a string that they carry over their shoulder. I knew the type of bag he was talking about. It is a shoe bag. They have draw strings and you can wear it similar to a back pack. I had many of these when I used to run track
So we head out to sportcheck looking for a new bag for him to use at school. We find the bags and he says "no dad, it should only have one string so I can carry it over one shoulder". I tell him that they all have 2 strings. People just put both strings over the same shoulder. Being only 5 years old, he didn't agree with me and we went on an endless mission looking for some sort of bag with a single draw string that he can carry over his shoulder.
After hours of searching stores at the mall (not one of my favourite things to do) we came up empty handed. We have no new bag but I have a very disappointed son.
Now a little known skill of mine is sewing. I do not brag about or even talk about this skill with many. So when we get home I sit him down and have a talk with him. I told him that I would attempt to make him a bag similar to what he was describing. I told him that we could go through his old baby blankets and he could pick one out. Below are the images of my success story!
My favourite part is that he started out wanting something that everyone else had, he ended up having a one of a kind bag that he was extremely proud of and ended up showing off to kids at school. He now takes it to school and is excited for the days that he has Gym class! Parenting win...
