Best-laid plans of cobble
_________________________

Change must ripple outwards
from schematics built of suff'ring,
by the blade of basest slaughter
have the ancient plans been written
with dark ink in grooves of stone.

       I ask not you alone
       but the panoply of artists
       of every-hued persuasion
       to gaze upon the tragedy
       and beauty of life-curse.

Still, joy is wov'n of shadow,
exub'rant cries of children
bright-echo cold destruction
brought swift, or agonizing
as the siege of winter's blast.

       Reflect on winters past;
       see the stores of seed
       held safely through the blizzard
to rise to meet men's need
through winding sprout that seeks the light.

Are men not made to fight?
Does life not rise to fall?
Does light not spark to dim,
sweet honey turn to gall
in course of time?

       The strength of wise conclusion
is borne by breadth of scope.
       Magnanimous profusion:
       events cold, yet warm hope
       still burns within.
