So the multiple Grammy award winning guitarist dropped this new track on his YouTube page less than one hour ago, and in fanboy fashion, I plugged my ears and listened...four times.
.
The track is about three minutes and thirty six seconds long, and comes few days after the "Daughters" and "Heartbreak Warfare" singer teased it on his Instagram feed earlier in the week. Mayer co-produced the song with No ID, and it's unclear whether there is a new album in the works, but it already earned nearly 40,000 views in less than one hour.
.
The sound of "New Light" is similar to that of "Love on The Weekend", the lead single off his 2017 album "The Search for Everything". There is a whole 80s feel to it, like something that Earth, Wind and Fire would have rendered. With funky tunes and a cute guitar solo in the song 's bridge, it's apparent that John is eager to make radio-friendly pop music again.
.
The track itself tells the story of a man wanting his crush to see him differently and give him a chance to prove the sincerity of its feelings. The lyrics are pretty good for a song of this decade, but judging by John's high songwriting standards, this is cheesy, buttery bubblegum pop. With lines like "I am the boy in your other phone/pushing 40 in your friend zone " and "what does it matter if your friends see me/who cares what they say anyway ", enthusiasts would get curious as to the whereabouts of the Mayer that employed lots of metaphors and blue-ocean-floor deep imagery in his earlier records. Like, where is the guy from "Dreaming With A Broken Heart", "Gravity" and "Stop This Train"? Mayer is a genius, and it's best for him to leave the teen pop tunes for the likes of Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran.
.
'New Light' is a safe, lovably bland offering for fans, and ammo for critics who have never taken John Mayer seriously. It boasts of good musicality, but the songwriting leaves much to be desired.
