The numismatic value of this US Seated Liberty Silver Dime was destroyed, probably, over a century ago, in the name of love. It was probably a perfect, shiny, brilliant uncirculated, silver dime when it was crafted into a popular, in its time "love token", in 1875. Of course, if it was still in that condition, it would be in a valuable collection and not in the $2 junk box, at the Local Coin Shop, for me to find. The condition is remarkable.
There is a lot of history behind the idea of giving a lasting "I Love You" item, to someone, for many different reasons.
The idea dates back to the Middle Ages. Some wore them as dog tags and IDs when going off to war. But, this novelty was probably picked up at an event such as a carnival, public gathering, or celebration event, around its date. Many found today, simply have a three-letter initial. Hopefully, it is right-side up.
