La ciudad de Cádiz entre los siglos XVII y XIX fue el puerto de entrada de todo lo que llegaba de América a España. Este hecho hizo que muchos ricos comerciantes se establecieran aquí para controlar los negocios de importación. Para poder observar sus naves en el puerto, ordenaron construir torres de observación en sus viviendas.
The city of Cadiz between the 17th and 19th centuries was the port of entry for everything coming from America to Spain. This fact led many rich merchants to settle here to control the import business. In order to be able to watch their ships in the port, they ordered observation towers to be built on their dwellings.
Estas atalayas ahora son un patrimonio arquitectónico de la ciudad.

Hay un total de 120 miradores conservados. Muchas torres al estar en edificios donde las calles son estrechas impiden que se pueda observar desde el suelo, siendo necesario subir a la azotea de alguna vivienda. Otras se ven pero con alguna dificultad.

Los señores comerciantes usaban palomas mensajeras para adelantar las gestiones de la carga de sus barcos. Mantenían bien cuidadas las palomas durante todo el viaje y cuando estaban cerca de la ciudad soltaban el ave, que sabía llegar a su palomar sin problemas, ubicados en los miradores.
The merchant lords used carrier pigeons to move their ships' cargo forward. They kept the pigeons well cared for during the whole journey and when they were near the city they released the bird, which knew how to reach its loft without any problems, located on the lookout points.
Comerciantes de otros países construyeron sus casas con estas torres en Cádiz. Sirios, italianos, franceses y holandeses entre otros.

Por el peligro de derrumbe, el ayuntamiento llegó a prohibir que se sigan construyendo.
