En 1805 muy cerca de aquí hubo una de las batallas navales más famosas de la historia. La escuadra francesa y española comandadas por el almirante Villenueve, salió al encuentro de la flota inglesa en el peor momento por culpa del miedo a Napoleón sin oír los consejos de Gravina, con más experiencia y conocedor de estas aguas. El resto lo hizo Nelson y las imprentas inglesas.
In 1805, very close to here, one of the most famous naval battles in history took place. The French and Spanish squadrons, commanded by Admiral Villenueve, went out to meet the English fleet at the worst possible moment due to fear of Napoleon, without listening to the advice of Gravina, who had more experience and knowledge of these waters. The rest was done by Nelson and the English printers.
Se formaron dos tormentas. Una provocada por el viento y las olas y otra más destructiva por los cañones. Juntas mandaron a pique a miles de hombres valientes. En la costa los familiares de los marinos hicieron fuegos para que los barcos que sobrevivieron pudieran orientarse.
Two storms formed. One caused by wind and waves and the other more destructive by cannon fire. Together, they sent thousands of brave men to the bottom. On the shore the sailors' families built fires so that the surviving ships could find their way.
Algunos barcos franceses no presentaron batalla y huyeron de la batalla dejando a sus compañeros a la merced del fuego inglés.
Some French ships did not put up a fight and fled the battle, leaving their comrades at the mercy of British fire.
Los navíos que no se hundieron ni huyeron fueron capturados tras horas de lucha y llevados a Gibraltar. Aunque algunos se amotinaron y escaparon.
The ships that did not sink or flee were captured after hours of fighting and taken to Gibraltar. However, some mutinied and escaped.
