The days appear now through a window fine,
Where once like golden streams unbounded flowed.
In youth no surface rippling mirror showed
The deepening lines that mark the aged vine.
Vigor and strength I took for powers free,
Eternal springs that never ran dry I deemed,
But now each morning brings how brief life's gleam -
The fire that once roared feels dim to me.
Yet eyes unchanged still seek truths I've not found,
Querying life's whys till the end they dare,
Consuming still the fruit that Socrates shared -
That sweet, sharp tang wisdom alone imparts
Through vistas silvered by memory's glass I view
The magic that once was, the dreams that shine through.
