Air conditioning is a mixed bag, really. We used to live in central Texas where 35-40 degrees C was the normal mid-afternoon high from May to October. Every. Single. Day.

It's nice to be cool, but we used to get US $700 monthly cooling bills... and that was in 2005. I'd hate to think what it is now.

We ended up living in our downstairs which was partially built into a hillside, ripped out the carpeting, polished the concrete slab smooth and painted it. Amazing how effective cold stone against bare feet is, in keeping cool.

These days, we just have a small portable unit on wheels which will cool our sleeping space, and that's generally all that's needed.
