Skateboarding is a very thrilling hobby, there is no better feeling than the wind blowing through your hair as you chuck yourself down a flight of stairs. Its a very dangerous sport don't get me wrong, but that's what makes it such an adrenaline pumping sport. When i was 9 years old i always watched my brother shed buckets of sweat as he tried to progress. Truth be told, he gradually lost interest more and more in skateboarding, and sad to say the least but partying and having fun seemed to be more appealing to him. But, it was these memories that sparked my passion for skateboarding. There is no better feeling then when you set a goal to learn a new trick, and spending hours, days, or even weeks practicing, and then landing it. Its a very fulfilling feeling, similar to real life, when you set a goal to get a job, or to learn a new instrument.
The great thing about skateboarding is there's no wrong way to skate. It is a freestyle sport, a sport where you can express yourself, and work at your own pace. Everyone has the ability to pick up that board of wood with wheels, and progress. The deciding factor though is whether your willing to put in the effort. Skateboarding can be very frustrating for most people, because 99% skateboarding is trial an error, developing your muscle memory, and improving your balance. One thing i have noticed is when people get on a board they usually come to a very quick conclusion. Most people either feel very uncomfortable because of their balance, or are afraid of hurting themselves, danger is a factor in every sport however. When i learned to skate, i was in their exact same shoes, but its not impossible. I have seen cases where people learned to pop an ollie within two weeks, and months later ollieng downstairs. When you do conquer that initial fear, skateboarding is a very enjoyable hobby, and it is worth putting in the effort.
You might get a bit dinged up in the process of mastering the sport, but believe me its worth it. Skateboarding for the soul purpose of just being able to say you can land these tricks is the wrong mentality. Alternatively, it is about the feeling of joy and for lack of a better term, euphoria. Do what makes you happy, skating with your friends, in some cases not even skating hard, just having fun and being with your friends is what skateboarding is all about. Its a sport that brings people together regardless of your other interests. There will be times, almost always when your at the skate park and you will see someone else skating, in the eyes of someone else they would in vision them as a stranger. But as a skateboarder, that person looks like another friend enjoying the sport, skateboarding is almost like a community.
All in all, it is a very fun sport and i encourage everyone to at least give it one shot. You might not like it, and that's okay, but for someone else they might feel as if they got a new hobby on their hands. I hope skateboarding will always be a part of my life, and i hope someday i might get the chance to persue it as more than just a hobby.
