They definitely can be trained, but only if they feel the reward is worth the effort.

I've trained my cat to do paw, and "speak". But even with the treat in sight she'll growl and reluctantly do the trick as if to say "this is demeaning, just give me the treat".

They're too intelligent for their own good.
