Purple Hearts is a classic drama/romance about a fake marriage released this year on Netflix.
The film tells the story of two people completely opposite in their philosophies of life who end up getting married even though they are two strangers. Of course, even though the marriage was fake, that doesn't mean the feelings weren't real.
Not every fake marriage ends happily, and for this couple the probability of that happening was very low, since such a false marriage is a crime both in military and civilian life.
Cassie (Sofia Carson) is an aspiring singer-songwriter who spends her days working as a bartender, struggling to pay her medical bills due to the fact that she has type 1 diabetes. On the other hand, Luke (Nicholas Galitzine) is an ex-marine drug addict who needs cash quickly to pay off past debts ($15,000) with his dealer.
One day, Cassie goes to the pharmacy to collect her insulin prescription, however, the pharmacist did not have the prescription because there are still 4 days left for the health insurance to authorize this dispensation.
Cassie, finding herself clearly in a life-threatening situation and in need of health insurance that would allow her to live, asks her best friend Frankie (Chosen Jacobs) to marry her since this way she would have the health insurance of soldier's wife who would already allow him to have the insulin he needed for his life.
Luke, who was Frankie's roommate, overheard the proposal and promptly reminded them that it was a crime and could be arrested and was against the idea. Frankie ended up refusing Cassie's proposal because he was dating another girl.
Luke, when he receives a visit from his ex-dealer, pressuring him for the money he owed him, threatening even his family (father, brother, sister-in-law and nephew) he ended up calling Cassie and aligning with her plan since then she would have the plan to insurance he needed so much, and he would earn more money which would make him able to pay his ex-dealer faster.
So they end up getting married in a hurry since Luke in 1 day would leave for Iraq.
Like ends up leaving for Iraq and during his stay he exchanged letters and calls with Cassie to show others that it was a serious marriage. During Luke's stay in Iraq, Cassie's career as a singer and songwriter began to take off, being inspired by the story she lived with her husband.
At the end of a "concert" at the bar where she works as a waitress, Cassie receives the news that she didn't expect Luke was injured in combat and would undergo an operation and later would return home for physical therapy and try to walk again.
This was not in the fake marriage agreement, as they would now have to live together lest they raise suspicions of the fake marriage and be judged.
They end up developing feelings similar to a true marriage, being by each other's side through illness and sharing good times.
Luke and Cassie end up being denounced by Luke's ex-dealer after he paid off his debt and threatened him.
Luke ended up being tried in military court and was eventually sentenced to 6 months in prison for fraud and discharge from the army nor perks, but he protected Cassie by fully taking the blame and that she knew nothing.
On the day that Luke had to perform at the military base, Cassie was giving a concert with her band at Florence and the Machine, but as soon as she finished acting she got in the car and went to Luke at the entrance of the base where she said she loved him and would wait for him.
Moral of the story, two opposites can actually attract each other and create feelings that complement each other when they least expect it.
