There is a sentence in almost every staking advert that should make you pause: rewards up to some large percent. It sounds like income, and technically it is, but income in what? Staking rewards are paid in the same coin you staked, and that one detail changes the whole story.

Imagine earning 5% more coins across a year while the coin itself drops 30%. You hold more coins and less money. That is not a trick or a scam, it is just how a coin-denominated reward works, and beginners who miss it end up surprised twice: once by the reward, once by the balance.

Key points:

- Rewards are paid in coins, so a price fall can outweigh the reward.

- Coins stay locked while staked, and unstaking can take days or weeks.

- High advertised rates on small networks often mean high inflation.

Lock-ups are the second surprise. Your coins are not free to sell while staked, and unstaking waits vary from a couple of days to a few weeks depending on the network. A market drop during that wait is a drop you can only watch.

Then there is the validator question. Delegating to a validator with a long honest record lowers the risk of slashing losses, but it never removes risk. Staking through an exchange is convenient, yet it puts your coins inside someone else's business, and someone else's business can fail.

My own view stays deliberately dull: staking fits coins you already own and intend to hold for a long time. It is not a shortcut to quick profit, it has no deposit protection, and it never guarantees a return. Read the lock-up, the commission and whether the rate is APR or APY, and let the boring details decide.
