Values are what they are, just as are the people who subscribe to those values.

Another thing is when some people give those values a bad name by purporting to support them when they don't, or even when they do the opposite.

It's the rotten apple that rots the whole barrel analogy. We should never give up on our ideals just because there are those who corrupt the meaning. To use another analogy: we should never give up on the truth just because there is a ministry of truth that only lies - the truth is still not a myth, even in spite of the ministry’s falsification that gives it a bad name.
