I know certain sports had a distinct class and still do in many ways. Footballers were always looked down upon as working class whereas rugby was more for academic people and middle to upper class. You will find many rugby players who are doctors and lawyers or have some type of degree for when their playing days are over. I suppose it also depends what country you live in but have always been aware of this type of thinking.
