You can pick up the authors styles and it is natural you will eventually prefer one over the other. I am no science fiction fan and each to their own. Maybe it got stretched out into 9 books due to there being multiple authors otherwise It would not make sense if it was just one author because it would not be enjoyable to write if it was a hard read.
