I think always shoot first and ask questions later by removing the risk immediately and your friends got lucky in this situation. No one likes to use their, gun but there are instances when you should if you have one. I know in SA if anyone is breaking into your house you have to actually wait for them to get inside before shooting them and then that is considered self defence.
