This is a short documentary filmed mainly at Consensus 2017 concerning the emergence of the Blockstack technology that seeks to restructure the internet, so that data is kept in the hands of the individual and is not available to companies who monetise it with no return to the user, and to governments who are sweeping it up for surveillance purposes.
Blockstack is the invention of Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, who met at Princeton University in 2013. At the time of filming in 2017 Muneeb had just successfully defended his PhD, and there is some footage of the defense included.
The idea behind Blockstack is give the power over data back to those who are actually creating it. Users have a unique encrypted namespace which gives them control over their data, and then the whole thing would run on decentralised apps.
This is surely one of the most promising projects out there seeking to change the way we interact with each other.
