In this TED talk Alex Winter – who previously made the documentary Deep Web about Ross Albright and the Silk Road – talks about why the dark net is more about the right to privacy, and that the governmental narrative about it being used for illegal activities is self serving, and wrong.
Alex himself has a personal reason why he got into privacy issues. Having become a film star at a young age, he found, like many a star before and since, that he had almost become public property. Having an interest in the internet since the 80s he found he could also join in anonymous chat rooms and explore his interests there.
Presently we have more information about us out there, in databases that are out of our control and are targets for hacking, that any of use would really like. As Alex says: we wouldn't allow the police or hackers to walk straight into our houses and ransack them, but we do allow them to do the same with our data. We need to take back our autonomy from those who would abuse it.
