That Kane penalty is going to be stuck in my head for weeks. You watch it ten times more, and you still can't believe he slipped at the exact wrong moment.
What gets me though isn't even the miss itself, but what came after. England just... erupted. The air went out of Wembley in about ninety seconds and Spain could smell it. Baena's goal was nearly a foregone conclusion but you could see it coming.
Credit where it’s due though, Spain never looked rattled when they were 2-1 down. Most teams would start pumping balls forward and praying. They just kept passing, kept moving, kept waiting. The poise in that age group is really scary to think about for the next decade or so.
I thought Gordon was the best for me. Actually looked like he wanted the ball in tight spaces and didn’t shy away from it. Hope it is a turning point for him internationally.
A painful result though on balance a fair one. We blinked first.
