Thousands of cryptocurrency enthusiasts are gathering in Miami this week as the city builds its reputation as one of the key locations to develop the blockchain technology. Dozens of high profile companies are using the Bitcoin 2022 conference as a venue to network, pitch ideas and share announcements around the technology. Miami is an underdog in the crypto space as New York City and Silicon Valley continued to lead in funding raised by blockchain startups in 2021. New York saw approx. $6.5 billion and $3.9 billion in Silicon Valley. The most notable move was FTX buying the naming rights for the NBA arena in downtown Miami last year. The largest crypto company to move to Miami so far is Blockchain.com which have 200 employees at a location in the hip Wynwood district.
So Why is Maimi Such a Hotspot?
Besides warm weather and beautiful bikini girls Many the city is creating a welcoming environment cultivated at the local level. Local officials such as Miami Mayor Francis Suarez have been big supporters. When you have local government on your side you get favorable tax breaks and zoning to create jobs which is a major factor in moves from more expensive areas.
As Miami aims to attract more investment, we will see more trade shows in the area. Just this year, Bitcoin 2022 organizers say at least 75 companies will be making announcements at the conference. Last year, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele made international news at the event, unveiling by video that his country would be the first to make cryptocurrency legal tender!
When you look at Florida ads whole South Florida saw its population decline by more than 18,000 people between July 2020 and July 2021. The real threat to this new push to make it a crypto hub is the ability to attract talent. It does not have a high-ranking university that could build workforces the way the Bay Area and New York do. However, with enough of a push from local governments they can incentives people to move.
I think we will start to see more of these hubs pop up across the US as adoption picks up. There's still a ton of money to be made and jobs to be created. Web 3.0 which will be fueled by decentralization and crypto is in its infancy. I'm excited to see where we go.
