Interesting read and that seems like quite the adventure. We were in the north part of Costa Rica and stayed on an amazing resort. We would walk around the small town and it was quite nice, Playa Hermosa - aptly named, Beautiful. One day we went to Coco Beach it was the cooler spot, some sketchy looking locals wanted to watch our stuff so we could both go swimming at the same time. LOL
