I just saw this little fellow hunkering down on the path. I raced right by him on my bike, he never budged. I stopped, went back to check on him. A storm went through last night and I think he either got blown from the tree or feathers soaked, or both. He didn't look injured, just laying low. I've heard it's okay to gently move a fledgling to a safe spot and they're usually okay. He seemed fine, and safe enough (though totally vulnerable to predators) so I decided to leave him as is rather than terrorize the little buy by picking him up.
Google tells me:
This young bird appears to be a swallow fledgling, possibly a species like the Purple Martin or Bank Swallow. If the bird is not injured, it is best to leave it alone, as its parents are likely nearby.
