Today is my day off from work and I wasn't planning to write, actually I wasn't planning to do anything at all if I'm honest. But since today is the 15th and a new Leo Power Up Day is celebrated I decided to throw a few lines to the blockchain.
From here this could continue with the typical filler text used by printers since time immemorial, aka: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua...", but I respect my three regular readers too much to make a barbarity of that magnitude.
So I have decided to tell you how I spent $1000 USD today to save $1000 USD tomorrow, it sounds like a guessing game but no, I will explain it below.
The decision to spend $1000 USD when I am not even close to being rich (actually I have more lacks than comforts) is given by a social historical phenomenon that has its origin in Cuba in 1959: public transportation.
To put you in context (although if you are Cuban you will understand), in Cuba many things work badly, but if there is one thing that is a constant Pi in the top 3 of things that do not work, one of them is public transportation. Here they have tried everything from Soviet Ikarus to Chinese Yutong buses. None have solved this situation because its cause is systemic: corruption, limited access to parts, "cannibalization" of their parts and pieces, etc, etc, etc.
The other side of the moon, the private carriers: In Cuba, despite not being a normal country, there are also private cabs, but as any [MaiMai] T-shirt (https://twitter.com/maimaiarte) would say, at what cost.
These cabs were never cheap, nowhere are they cheap, but because of the hyperinflation in the country the cost of riding one of these vehicles is bordering on the clouds.

To give you an idea, to get from my house to my workplace I have to get on 2 buses and then walk a couple of kilometers or take 4 cabs and then walk the same 2Km.
The first option is unfeasible for me because the buses have no fixed schedule, usually arrive full of people of all kinds (including thieves), are in bad condition, are slow, hot ... the second also lacks comfort and regularity, but at least one is sitting (badly seated) in one of those cars of more than 40 years ago commonly called "almendrones". The problem with these is their price. Doing a quick sum, between going to and returning to my work I could easily spend more than 850 CUP.
850 CUP x 5 working days = 4,250 CUP per week
4,250 CUP x 4 weeks = 17,000 CUP per month
17,000 CUP x 12 months = 204,000 CUP per year
204,000 CUP / 245 CUP = 832 USD per year
This is without considering extra trips, only from home to work.
Imagine paying 832 USD a year, in transportation... there is no salary that can stand that expense, at least not a common salary, not a Cuban salary. So I started looking for a solution to this issue. Not a solution for transportation in Cuba, that can't be fixed 馃槀... I mean a solution for my transportation problem.
If I kept going by cab to my job, I wouldn't be able to save a single peso, it's unsustainable... I would end the year knowing that I "gave away" 832 USD to Havana cab drivers, money that I could use on more useful things... like buying my own means of transportation (hence the title of this article).
I opted for this option, since this way, at the end of a year I will still have the transportation and hopefully about 1000 USD saved (the same I used to spend on travel). It's up to me to make those savings, putting in my mind the idea that I still take a cab to work when in fact I don't.
What did I buy? A vehicle that is very popular in Cuba. The famous electric bike Mishozuki Grillo is my bet not to spend more money on transportation. Although it is a bit small, it admits two passengers so my wife and I can move around easily (double savings) and we get anywhere sooner, as long as it is within battery range.
I will not emphasize much on its technical features as I want to reserve them for a post dedicated only to this, but I will leave some pictures:

Gastar 1000 USD hoy para ahorrar 1000 USD ma帽ana | LPUD
Hoy es mi d铆a de descanso en el trabajo y no ten铆a pensado escribir, en realidad no ten铆a pensado hacer absolutamente nada si te soy sincero. Pero dado que hoy es d铆a 15 y se celebra un nuevo Leo Power Up Day he decido lanzar unas l铆neas a la blockchain.
A partir de aqu铆 esto podr铆a continuar con el t铆pico texto de relleno que usan las imprentas desde tiempos inmemorables, aka: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua...", pero respeto mucho a mis tres lectores habituales como para hacer una barbaridad de esa envergadura.
As铆 que he decido contarles como gast茅 1000 d贸lares hoy para ahorrar 1000 d贸lares ma帽ana, suena adivinanza pero no, te lo explico a continuaci贸n.
La decisi贸n de gastar $1000 USD cuando ni de cerca soy rico (en realidad tengo m谩s carencias que comodidades) viene dada por un fen贸meno hist贸rico social que tiene su origen en la Cuba de 1959: el transporte p煤blico.
Para ponerte en contexto (aunque si eres cubano entender谩s), en Cuba funcionan mal muchas cosas, pero si hay una que es Pi constante en el top3 de cosas que no funcionan, una de ellas es s铆 o s铆 el transporte p煤blico. Aqu铆 han probado de todo, desde 贸mnibus sovi茅ticos de marca Ikarus, hasta Yutong chinos. Ninguno ha resuelto esta situaci贸n porque su causa es sist茅mica: corrupci贸n, acceso limitado a piezas, "canibalizaci贸n" de sus partes y piezas, etc, etc, etc.
El otro lado de la luna, los trasportistas privados: En Cuba, a pesar de no ser un pa铆s normal, tambi茅n existen los taxis privados, pero como dir铆a cualquier camiseta de MaiMai, a qu茅 costo.
Estos taxis nunca fueron baratos, en ning煤n sitio lo son, pero es que a ra铆z de la hiperinflaci贸n que se vive en el pa铆s el costo de montar uno de estos veh铆culos est谩 rozando las nubes.
Dejo esto aqu铆 y contin煤o con mi texto...
Para que te hagas una idea, para trasladarme de mi casa a mi centro de trabajo tengo que subir a 2 贸mnibus para luego caminar un par de kil贸metros o tomar 4 taxis y luego caminar los mismos 2Km.
La primera opci贸n es inviable para m铆 porque los 贸mnibus no tienen horario fijo, normalmente llegan repletos de gente de todo tipo (ladrones incluidos), est谩n en mal estado, son lentos, calurosos... la segunda tambi茅n carece de confort y de regularidad, pero al menos uno va sentado (mal sentado) en uno de esos autos de hace m谩s de 40 a帽os com煤nmente llamados "almendrones". El problema con estos es su precio. Haciendo una suma r谩pida, entre ida y regreso a mi trabajo podr铆a gastarme tranquilamente m谩s de 850 CUP.
850 CUP x 5 d铆as laborales = 4,250 CUP a la semana
4,250 CUP x 4 semanas = 17,000 CUP al mes
17,000 CUP x 12 meses = 204,000 CUP al a帽o
204,000 CUP / 245 CUP = 832 USD al a帽o
Esto es sin considerar salidas extras, solo de la casa al trabajo.
Imagina pagar 832 USD al a帽o, en transporte... no hay salario que aguante ese gasto, al menos no un salario com煤n, no un salario cubano. As铆 que me puse a buscar una soluci贸n para este asunto. No una soluci贸n para el transporte en Cuba, eso no tiene arreglo 馃槀... digo una soluci贸n para mi problema de transporte.
Si segu铆a yendo en taxi a mi trabajo, no podr铆a ahorrar ni un peso, es insostenible... terminar铆a el a帽o sabiendo que "regal茅" 832 USD a los taxistas de La Habana, dinero que podr铆a utilizar en cosas m谩s 煤tiles... como comprarme mi propio medio de transporte (de ah铆 el t铆tulo de este art铆culo).
Opt茅 por esta opci贸n, ya que as铆, al cabo de un a帽o a煤n tendr茅 el transporte y con suerte unos 1000 USD ahorrados (los mismos que antes me gastaba en viajes). Queda por m铆 hacer ese ahorro, poniendo en mi mente la idea de que a煤n voy en taxi al trabajo cuando en realidad no lo hago.
驴Qu茅 me compr茅? Un veh铆culo que est谩 muy de moda en Cuba. La famosa bici-moto el茅ctrica Mishozuki Grillo es mi apuesta para no gastar m谩s dinero en transporte. Aunque es un poco peque帽a, admite dos pasajeros as铆 que mi esposa y yo podemos movernos con facilidad (doble ahorro) y llegamos antes a cualquier sitio, siempre que est茅 al alcance de la bater铆a.
