The proposed impeachment for President Donald Trump is gaining traction among his critics; it surged to 3% points since last week according to an Oct. 18-22 public poll. The poll states that 46% of Americans supported Trump's impeachment and 40% are against it.
The numbers speak for their view on the president's attitude toward foreign threats, specifically his decision to pull troops from northern Syria. This came ahead of Turkey’s cross-border offensive against the Kurds. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by the Turkish offensive. It also raised concerns that Islamic State group prisoners might be able to escape.
Now, much of the numbers favoring the impeachment came from the independents.
Among them, 45% stated that they support the moves toward impeachment while 32% opposed it.
Since June 2018, 1 in 3 independents had said an impeachment would be good.
In 2016, it could be remembered that President Donald Trump was supported by the independents, thus strongly suggesting that they would be needed yet again for his re-election.
This decision drew the chagrin of the Congress. It might have even hurt his disposition among rank-and-file republicans.
Seventy-three (73%) of the Republicans said they found the president’s handling of U.S. foreign policy to be agreeable. On the other hand, 75% said they approved of his handling of IS. This had been down 6 points and 8 points from the month of April.
The poll came after several administration officials came in support of the whistleblower’s report that Trump had pressured Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. This he had done allegedly to investigate one of his main political rivals, Joe Biden, the former Vice President.
Trump has since denied involvement with the shady deal. He resorted into trying to block administration officials to aid with the investigation. Just this week, President Trump had said that he had been the victim of a “lynching,” something that several lawmakers had been quick to condemn as it is a racially-charged description.
