Your article and this exercise in perspective have reminded me of another rather interesting observation. I may write an article about it one day.

Have you ever looked at a half-moon during sunlit hours and considered the direction the illuminated side appears to be pointing? It's perplexing, because it does not appear to be pointing to the Sun. A casual observer might conclude that there's some other quite invisible source of illumination somehow hidden from view.

Yet the distance to the Sun and the Sun's angular extent, when perspective is considered, explain the apparent illusion. :)
