John, I am a biblical theologian with a strong interest in the eternal state of mankind.

One of my observations from a lifetime of studying the scriptures has been that the church—speaking very generally—has a number of systemic theological errors large enough to drive a phalanx of angels through. I believe these blind spots exist because of a strange confluence of cultural influences, tradition, timidity, lack of imagination, and sheer stubborn unwillingness to actually accept what God has told us about himself and has clearly displayed in the universe he created for us to enjoy.

The result has been a vast opportunity for the enemy. Working through various heretical cults, our adversary has latched on to a few biblical truths that the church either denies or ignores, and has featured them as honey traps to draw in unsuspecting souls. The cult you've alluded to here is one example of a group that draws men in with an attractive, out of context truth and then proceeds to damn them by denying the core tenet of the good news, namely, that Jesus is the LORD God.

One other notable example I can point out is a group that celebrates a present and coming Kingdom for its followers. It (rightly) denies another almost universal, twisted and sadistic medieval church doctrine. I am of course referring to the gruesome, unbiblical teaching that God intends to eternally, consciously torture unbelievers in a lake of fire. Very sadly, like the other group you've alluded to, this group also denies Jesus' true identity.

Both groups are examples of cults that have gotten one or two important doctrines absolutely right. They use those accurate and biblical doctrines to divert souls from the truth of the gospel.

My thesis is that the church needs to wake up and stop its posturing on these and other points it clings to, these utterly false and unbiblical traditions. We need to actually read and accept what both the book of creation and the written word of God have to say, no matter what we've been taught all our lives.

Theologians and pew sitters alike are simply intellectually lazy and in denial. Why else would our theology of heaven be such a two-dimensional, milquetoast, neutered, and puritanically Victorian caricature?
