I saw the movie but did not read the books yet.
When you told me about the event in your personal relationship with your boyfriend I could relate. Relationships have ups and downs. But when there is love and respect usually love wins the argument. I am pretty sure that he got to appreciate you more in the moment of wanting to end it and maybe you also gained appreciation for him. Of course there are exceptions when a separation is required and looking back no more is the only choice. I am happy to see this was not your case.
