Locking up a couple in order to force them to solve their problems might work even today as this is a way of making someone concentrate fully on the situation. It would be excruciating though because of the lack of any device which could soothe the pain. I do wonder why people need to be forced to communicate when the obvious solution would be to do it voluntarily.
