It has always been the case, both in stocks and currently in crypto. Investing in bigger companies will tend to assure you of returns, but not so big returns. Taking the risk to investigate smaller companies that have real prospects and investing in it - that's where lots of money is made. But like you rightly mentioned - it's a risky affair.
