Hey everyone, today's harvest, who's jealous? I have not made a vegetable garden update in a while, it is a very chilly Winter's day so decided what better than to do so today and now?
I head off into my amazing vegetable garden today to harvest something delicious for dinner. What a nice surprise to get a nice new purple'ish' looking Carrot, as well as the usual 'suspects'
How amazing does that Spinach look? (fordhook giant) I have been experimenting with a homegrown fertilizer I call Humble Harry's Home-Grown Plant Food, based on the rich deep green colour it clearly is working?
Around 4 months ago I planted a vast array of all different species of garlic. Here we have an Elephant Giant Garlic Leaf. These will be ready for harvest in the next two months odd, I can't wait to make a delicious basil pesto with my freshly grown garlic and basil fresh from the garden and as heirloom and natural as it gets!
Seeding Vegetables.. This at first may not seem as a good thing as your precious vegetables are not reproducing and are no longer edible, however you may now pick the seeds dry them out and plant them again, bonus, no need to buy the seeds again. My lettuce as well as Chinese Spinach are currently going to seed. I will harvest dry out and plant again in around the next month odd ready for the nice Summer production!
Sadly this is never a nice sight in your own organic vegetable garden. One of the drawbacks is I do not use any pesticides at all. EVERYTHING eats kale, from slugs, nails, aphids, to birds even, it really is tough to get to harvest kale before everything eats it. My strategy to this point has been simply plant more, problem is all these 'critters' invited their family to the feeding fest :( I still do manage to harvest some every now and then ;)
Here we have a nice mature loose leaf gourmet lettuce. I enjoy lettuce in a salad once a week, it really is not as versatile as kale spinach and chinese cabbage which I eat just about daily. Great to see these lovely, deep, rich, healthy colours!
