@mcnestler -- I recently relocated to Hollywood about three months ago, though I was living in Wynwood for three years up to that point, my house was literally falling apart so I had to go. I know that area very well, that I went to high school just up the street at Design and Architecture Senior High, the neighborhood has changed entirely over the last decade (Wynwood didn't exist in 2007) and honestly it all perspires a bit of a conflated image for my taste. There's a whole other world in Broward and a far more receptive crowd than that of the tourist bunch down South, I prefer it up here.
The last Art Basel I attended was when it first came to Miami back in 2007 and since then an influx of supposed "artistic" folk have rapidly moved in and pushed out the native culture there. A very long story short: Miami is thoroughly commercialized and much removed from its own true local voice of that particular area the global art fair is held in. You'd have to stay a while longer to see that side of the tracks.
This year and onwards, I'm focusing my marketing efforts in Broward and their local version of Wynwood, FAT Village, where they hold their own art walk as well as a street fair that gets a fair large crowd every month just a few miles East of me. This market is incredibly accessible, a diverse local group turns out to support, and far more organized than the traffic madness in the South.
:)
