The Bible declares that Christ is our life in many ways. However, the meaning of the expression "Christ is our life" is not so simple. Let's see 1 Corinthians 1:30. We can divide this passage into two sections. The first says: "But for Him you are in Christ Jesus." This refers to the relationship we have with Christ. The second says: "Which has been made from God by wisdom." This refers to the relationship that Christ has with us. In other words, this verse shows that we are in Christ, and that Christ is in us. We must pay attention to these two aspects. Some Christians emphasize the first aspect, and others, the second. If we are partial and emphasize one of the two, this will cause problems and affect our Christian life. We must have an appropriate knowledge of both. We must know that we are in Christ and that He is in us.
"But for Him you are in Christ Jesus." This is something exclusively done by God. Since we did not know this, it was necessary for the church to preach the gospel so we could hear it. The church announces to man the shocking fact that God put humanity in Christ. Therefore, when the Lord Jesus was crucified and judged by God, man was also judged in Him. This means that the judgment on Christ reaches all men, since they are related to Him. This is the gospel. The gospel tells us that God did something in Christ and that He included us in Him. When God judged Christ, He also judged us with Him. God solved the problem of sin and self. Thank God that we die in Christ. This is the reason why Romans 6:11 says: "So also you, consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus."
We have died in Christ Jesus. What should we do after knowing this fact? After believing in this fact, we must express it in some way. This is the reason why by believing in the Lord and being saved, we want to be baptized. What does baptism mean? It is to be included in Christ Jesus and in His death (Rom 6: 3-4). Put another way, God put us in Christ, but we have to manifest this to others. Our baptism shows the way we were placed in Christ. When we are submerged in the water, do we stay there? No, we left quickly. Leaving the water means that we have risen with Christ. Therefore, to emerge from the water testifies that He was resurrected; that is, that our baptism is the confirmation of the work that God did for us in Christ. It is a spiritual representation that physically expresses what God did for us in Christ.
The Christian life is based on the fact that Christ is our life. The first step of our salvation is regeneration, and the last is the redemption of our body; but the basis is Christ as life. The relationship that exists between Christ and us is a relationship of life, an unbreakable relationship. Christ is not outside of us, but in us as our life. A relationship in life can not be broken. If we have not received Christ as life, nothing unites us to Him. But since we have received Him as our life, we have a close relationship with Him. When Adam sinned, God immediately safeguarded access to the tree of life by putting cherubs and a a burning sword that was stirring on all sides (Gen. 3:24). This was because if Adam had eaten the fruit of the tree of life, he would have entered into a lasting relationship with God. We thank God because our relationship with Christ is an unbreakable relationship, a relationship that Adam never had. The relationship that exists between God and us is not broken by God himself. This life remains in us and leads us to glory and eternity. What great power and what glorious hope!
May the Lord open our eyes so that we may see that God put us in Christ and made it our wisdom, justice, sanctification and redemption. May the Lord show us that of all the gifts He has given us, none is as wonderful as His Son. Hopefully we see that Christ is not a single gift, but many. We must learn to know Christ as our righteousness, sanctification and redemption, and we must allow the Lord to rescue us from ignorance and darkness, so that we understand that there is only Christ in the spiritual realm.
