You thought it was going to be a crow, huh.
Well it's not! Tee hee. It's a Northern Flicker, which is a type of woodpecker common to my region.

This buddy is eating a fuyu persimmon. That's the crunchy kind. Persimmon trees don't fruit until fall, and often times I see these trees completely naked of leaves and still adorned with their beautiful pastel fruits. An autumnal Christmas tree.

While Pilot and I were out walking, I stopped to admire the impressive acrobatics the squirrels were performing in order to retrieve the persimmons from the slender branches. Such core strength!
That's when I noticed the flicker.

My camera was tucked away in my bag. I had to keep a good distance while I retrieved it so as not to startle the snacker. Flickers, from what I've observed, are pretty shy.

I got lucky, though. Even though he noticed me staring and scooting closer, he was comfortable enough to keep eating. Maybe I have a reputation, now. If the guardians of the neighborhood (the crows) are ok with me, I must not be very threatening.

Either that or these persimmons were worth the risk.

They do look pretty frickin delicious.
