I go as far along the path as I can before the bog and the PRIVATE PROPERTY sign stop me. Beyond them stands a house overlooking a lawn. Its lush overgrown green tendrils stretch out onto the shoreline of Hood Canal.

Upon that lawn is a sprawling of seals, just out of view beyond the tall grass.

I retrace my steps to a picnic table in the public park. Stand on top of it to get a shot. The seals peer at me through the long swaying blades, pondering the human and her umbilical attachment to an otter-like creature. I peer back at them through my long black eyeball.

How would it feel to live here? I wonder. To greet a lazy late morning with seals and coffee in my own backyard?
