I talk about how traditional wallets require you to put your money in a third parties hands - which adds inherent risk. Self custodial wallets like Shapeshift allow you to buy fiat with your bank account or debit card without ever losing control of your funds. You can also trade directly within the platform without ever putting your money on an exchange.
