I have become obsessed with Dapps in the month or so, and think that they are going to be the game changer for Steem, especially after the upcoming release of SMTs. What these Dapps are doing is incentivising users to create top quality content, by offering rewards, such as upvotes, tokens and other user benefits. Rather than the consumer being the product, and earning no money (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Quora), these Dapps are changing the game by giving back to their most important asset - the users, and content creators!

Musing.io

I recently became aware of musing@musing, and was instantly intrigued. The concept behind Musing is that it is an incentivised question and answer platform (much like Yahoo Answers or Quora). Musing recently recieved a delegation of 1 million SP, which they state will 'go back to the users' in the form of upvotes for quality questions and answers.

With this delegation, and incentive, users are motivated to write high quality content, and thus it provides Musing with a point of difference. Questions and answers are curated manually by the Musing team, to ensure that only the best content is rewarded.

Dclick.io

dclick@dclick is another Dapp that I have become aware of recently thanks to a post by taskmaster4450@taskmaster4450, and am using for this post! The idea behind Dclick is simple - users can 'monetize' their content through the Dclick website by allowing ads on their posts. The more clicks the ads get, the more revenue the user will recieve.

There have been some debates about Dclick, as some don't want ads on the Steem blockchain. I think it is a great initiative, as it allows users another way to monetise their content. Rather than Facebook and other social media, Dclick shares the ad revenue with its users - so you aren't sharing the ads for nothing!

Actifit

actifit@actifit was one of the first Dapps I got involved with, and I am loving it. Again the concept is simple - you get rewarded for physical activity. The Actifit app measures your daily step count, which you then can upload to the Steem blockchain on a daily basis, along with a story and pictures. Your posts get upvoted by the actifit@actifit account based on a number of factors such as your daily step count, delegation status, and quality of posts.

The great thing about Actifit is it rewards you for something you would already be doing - unlike apps like Runkeeper or Strava who track your fitness activity but then onsell your data.

What does this mean for Steemit?

Steemit was the first blogging platform on the Steem blockchain, and seems to be the arriving platform for a lot of new users. ALot of new users don't even know the difference between Steem and Steemit. However, with the rise of these new Dapps, and the ability for them to onboard new users, it is going to put pressure on Steemit to make some changes to retain users.

Even popular alternative busy.org offers users upvotes from their bot for users who use their platform and use the tag #busy. With incentives elsewhere I think Steemit is in need of some major changes to incentivise users to use their platform.

What is Steemits point of difference? How can Steemit incentivise users to keep using the platform?

Conclusion

With the rise of the many Dapps the power and control of monotising content is being put back in the hands of the content creators. This is leading to more oppurtunites on the Steem blockchain and higher quality of content.

Steemit, although the most well known webiste on the Steem blockchain, needs to make some changes in order to retain its users and bring in new users.

What is your favorite Dapp, and how does it incentivise its users?
