I first came to the United States for college and have lived here for 5 years now, so I have been involved in both Chinese and English speaking blockchain communities. So far I have already lost track of how many times this happened: when I talk about some famous Chinese blockchain projects with an English speaking person, and he/she has no idea about what it is, or even about its existence. And not surprisingly, the same goes the other way around. That’s right, one of the greatest invention in the 21st century, which incorporates our best knowledge in computer science, cryptography and economy, has been pulled over by language barriers.
We know that blockchain runs on the Internet, and should work across the globe as if there are no such things as borders, but it seems that our submarine cable, although being able to transmit Gigabytes of data per second, cannot carry any coins other than BTC and ETH well enough.
That is why I am saying we need Zheng He in blockchain, so who is this guy?
Zheng He is the most well-known explorer in China, for his several grand voyages during the Ming Dynasty. His fleet consisted of hundreds of ships carrying tens of thousands of crew, and brought with them goods from the middle kingdom to trade with other civilizations. His journey went as far as east Africa.
Zheng He didn’t just went out there to find foreign lands. He was bridging the gap, both economically and culturally, between countries. This is exactly what we need right now in the blockchain community.
Now, I don’t want to end this article with some great ambitions about becoming Zheng He in blockchain. That is not my style. The truth is, no companies or individuals can do this alone. What I will say is that WTZ Blockchain College will do its best to help achieving this goal, right now mainly focusing on connecting English and Chinese speaking communities.
Blockchain cannot thrive as a regional technology. It is decentralized, we all like that so far. Now we need to make it globalized.
