About 20 years ago the company I was with was working on the eastbound lanes of I-40 between Raleigh and Durham. Big construction project, adding lanes and all that. Major traffic control. Big traffic jams every day.

The state of North Carolina, in its infinite wisdom, had decided to break the project into two halves, awarding the contract for the eastbound lanes to one contractor, and the westbound lanes to another. The upshot of this being that our competition was working right across the road from us.

They had a programmable sign (like the one in the picture) on their side of the road, and one night when we were out there on the night shift, we noticed they had neglected to padlock the control panel on the sign. Back then any laptop with the right software and a serial port could change the message on any sign. We had signs of our own, so naturally we had laptops and cables for it.

So the next morning as rush hour started, and the inevitable traffic jam blew up, their sign was flashing an unusual message.
