Everything changes very quickly and thus we have to be able to keep up the pace. Like if I talk about being a developer 10 years ago, you work, attend a few conferences and thus you are good. But today, along with that technical skills you have to have a personal touch that actually sets you apart. And that is true not only in development work but everywhere. You have to sell yourself and create that personal brand for yourself. Personal branding is actually creating a unique identification that actually shows your skills, and experience to the world.

And since it's personal branding, it has to be relevant thus keeping it consistent matters a lot. That means you have to show yourself every day. And that is nothing but selling yourself to create a brand. Selling means not selling literally but actually marketing yourself. Like if I talk most of the developers now are actually creating their Youtube Video, Working on Open Source, doing leetcode and whatnot.
This was not the case 10 years ago. Now everyone is actually enjoying the fame they are getting and that is mainly after creating their personal branding. There are some negative effects of personal branding too. A lot of individuals have joined a good company and then after a while left it because they will start focusing on YouTube only and thus start selling the courses.
To be honest it is not bad for them because they are actually earning from their personal brand. That is basically they have sold themselves to earn money. This is what the great marketing skills meant. You should be able to sell anything or everything to anyone and thus this is where the authority of your personal brand comes into the picture. The drawback of a personal brand is that if you are doing some silly things, then it might backfire too.
