Tetris can surely be put up there on the podium of the most played videogames in history along with Mario Bros but I think that for some time I considered that this game was like those that are on Android that only serve to distract a while and that I already knew everything I could get out of them, until I met Tetris Effect a few weeks ago.
I was looking at some of the games that are coming out of the Game Pass catalogue and I came across this gem, it's been around for a while and at the time I remember its multiplayer being quite played but it's only recently that I was able to install it and play some of this psychedelic journey through the by a classic game that knows how to reform itself quite well to amaze gamers.
I think the best way to describe this game is with the phrase tetris on drugs, the music, the graphic effects and in general how it reinterprets a gameplay that is more than known by everyone makes this game great to play on those nights where you need to distract yourself, the first levels are a mix of a spa where you can relax and go placing the blocks in your time to a tribal festival where the speed is devilish and that's where the real difficulty of the game takes shape.
In journey mode (campaign mode) the levels are divided into several zones, where we start with most of the effects and music off and little by little as we go placing blocks and clearing the lines is that everything starts to emerge little by little, in this mode we will have to fulfill some objective to pass round (often are clearing a certain amount of rows), when we finish one directly launches us to the next level of the zone following the same game we carry, it is a fairly comfortable transition that makes it more exciting to overcome each level.
Every level has a unique theme, song or sound effects that accentuate the journey we are on, there are levels where we go up from the bottom of the ocean to the moon with each line we clear, another where we take a walk through a city full of Jazz with each block we place, each level has its own unique theme that make beating and playing the next one doesn't get monotonous at all.
We also have several other modes that complete the experience quite well, as I said the multiplayer I have not been able to play because it is empty for the most part, I was waiting for some game for hours and I think the best days of that mode have passed, but we also have some others like the Puzzle Mode that I think I have seen somewhere and is based on solving the puzzles that are on the boards as quickly as possible, it can get quite complicated so it's good for a change.
There are also modes like Marathon which is based on the fact that we have to complete 150 lines of blocks in the scenario we choose while the music and the speed increases constantly, I think this is the mode that I like the most to test my skill with Tetris, there are moments where you have to react with your reflexes and this mode makes things quite difficult if we reach the fastest speed, definitely to try if you are going to play this game and if you are a Tetris lover.
If there is one thing I love about this version of the classic game it must be the level designs, many of them can be appreciated in the quiet moments but are overlooked when the speed increases, even so I must say that all the effects, how immersive the music becomes and that feeling of being in a parallel world make this experience quite worthwhile and a pretty good starting point for those who have not played this classic, my girlfriend had never played one of these and she was delighted.
I've been seeing that there is also a VR version which looks fantastic, even so I think if you don't have Game Pass its market price may be a bit high considering it has a couple of levels in travel mode and although you pass the numerous challenges it has I think the replay value will be determined by how much (or little) you like playing tetris, it works well as a game to play with friends, at a party or even alone but once you finish its content there is little to do considering the multiplayer is a wasteland.
