Some games need enormous maps, hundreds of mechanics, and spectacular graphics to keep players entertained. Then there are games like Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder, which manage to achieve something much simpler and, perhaps, much harder: making you finish a run and immediately think about starting another one.

Combolands combines city building, strategy, and roguelike mechanics into relatively short runs. Its premise sounds simple at first: place buildings, increase your population, and take advantage of different combinations to make your small city grow. However, beneath that minimalist presentation lies a surprisingly deep system of synergies.

The real magic comes from the combos. Each building has its own purpose, but its true potential becomes apparent when you place it next to the right structures. A building that initially seems almost useless can suddenly become one of the most important pieces of your city once you discover how its effects interact with other buildings.

That is when Combolands begins to feel like those games that turn a simple mechanic into an obsession. At first, you simply want to complete the next objective. Then you want to improve your score. Eventually, you start thinking about what combination you could create in your next run.

The game also features different guilds that influence the way you approach each run. Players can choose two guilds, each offering different advantages, limitations, and opportunities for synergy. As a result, two runs can play out completely differently even when they begin with similar strategies.

Another important element is the length of the runs. Combolands does not demand several hours before your city finally starts to take shape. Instead, the experience is much faster. You build, experiment, make mistakes, discover new strategies, and start again.

And losing does not necessarily feel like a complete failure. Every run gives you an opportunity to learn something new while unlocking additional possibilities. With different buildings, relics, and combinations available, the game gradually expands the number of strategies you can experiment with.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Combolands is that it demonstrates that depth does not always require hundreds of complicated systems. Sometimes, all you need is a handful of simple rules that interact with each other in interesting ways.

The game's overwhelmingly positive reception on Steam is another indication that this formula is connecting with players. Instead of trying to become the biggest or most ambitious city builder on the market, Combolands focuses on doing one thing extremely well: creating a satisfying gameplay loop that constantly makes you want to experiment.

That may ultimately be its greatest strength.

Combolands does not need to be the biggest city builder out there. It simply gives you a small city, a collection of buildings, and enough possibilities to make you think, after finishing a run: “Just one more game.”
