My Musings on Moss
The forest is full of little forests of moss. They do pretty well for being silly avascular things. I used to know all about their life cycle in my college days. Unfortunately, my awesome brain deemed such knowledge worthy of purging to oblivion. A quick Wikipedia read (I remember some of the words I read there!) tells me the extensions you see are known as sporophytes. After fertilization, these stalks grow throughout the course of 3 to 6 months. Once ready to spread their spores, the tops bursts due to stored air pressure, sending them accelerating at a ridiculous rate, experiencing 36,000 g. Which is fine; they're super small. You'd probably die. Don't try this at home.
Look at them. They're loving all that gorgeous moisture.
Yeah, moss is pretty cool. And it's found in cool and moist places. I wish that I could be that cool... and moist. /chortle
