Authorities in Indonesia have raised the Warning Alert to the highest level possible for volcanic Mount Agung, which could be set to have a catastrophic, explosive eruption.
The mandatory evacuation area has been expanded and more air travel in the region has been suspended.
A major volcanic eruption there could have global consequences to weather and climate and potentially create a global cooling event. A major eruption in this region in 1815 led to the “Year without a Summer” in portions of the eastern United States, bringing frost to Cape May, New Jersey for a week in the summer, snow on June 7th and 8th in Massachusetts, and lake and river ice in July and August as far south as northwestern Pennsylvania.
